how many steps to find vcs, and how to send patches
FOSS projects need to agree on a word that means "click here to get the latest code from our vcs and find out how to send us patches". It's sometimes under "help", or "support", or "community", or "download" - sometimes there's no link at all.
Here are what i consider good examples - i can find the info within one click of the homepage.
- Drupal - Contribute
- Silverstripe - Contribute... find out more
- Symfony - Development
- Statusnet - Open Source
- Moodle - Development
- Dreamwidth - open source
- ubuntu - community
You can see the word used varies alot - and perhaps someone wanting to contribute documentation or graphics will do a double take at needing to look under "development".
I want to note that silverstripe's subversion was further into their site, at Downloads->subversion, not linked from their contributions page.
and some that are 3 steps from home page, which is pretty good
- indefero - open source - Be Part of the Community Indefero's Indefero
- Gnome - Development - gnome development
- Wordpress - Docs - Developer Documentation - Contributing to wordpress
and on some projects it's several steps, and sometimes a complete maze to find where I check if the bug i found is already fixed on head, and where to send patches.
- Community ID - help & support - files - tried searching for "version control" - not found - Go to Wiki - found svn location - cannot find where to send patches.
- Mahara - Open source - read long page about how we're welcome to contribute - back to home page - follow community link - Bug/Feature Trackers - tried searching for "version control" - not in the first page of results - searched for "git" - found Getting code from git - spotted in the menu of the wiki: Contributing code
It would be preferable if we could standardise this somewhat. I very much prefer "contribute" to "development", because development implies code only, excluding translators, documenters, testers, graphic designers and more.
-->Some draconian copyright law - from England 15th Century
This law from England in the 15th century forbids translating the bible from Latin into English:
"whosoever reads the Scriptures in the mother tongue, shall forfeit land, cattle, life, and goods from their heirs forever, and so be condemned for heretics to God, enemies to the crown, and most arrant traitors to the land."
